I've noticed some subtle changes between 'old' and 'new' computing speak in common use today, apart from the obvious (electronic mail being shortened to email), here are some that I've noticed (old talk on the left):

VDU = Monitor
Monitor = Does not exist in nearly all cases
Global variables = Public variables
FOR/NEXT loop = FOR loop
BASIC = VB in most cases
Programming = Web design/HTML
Coding = Programming
DATA table = Closest I could find was a matrix array
Scrolly (or scrolling) text = Animated marquee
Text/Graphical adventure or adventure game = Interactive fiction
Boot ROM = BIOS
[Sub] routines or functions = Methods
Crunching/decrunching or packing/unpacking = zipping/unzipping

Any more?

Regards,

Shaun.

During a moment of scorn:

Bug checking/beta testers = patch it later...
Common sense = useless, expensive internet security bundle
Apple = cash cow
Moron = PC World TechGuys

And why the hell do people call their desktop background their screen saver??? STOP IT!

Another one I've just thought of: people now talk about 'downloading' something from a CD-ROM or DVD... downloading???, err, shouldn't that be 'installing'?

Regards,

Shaun.

So what do you call a tester who (a) used to be a tech guy and (b) works for a company part-owned by Apple? :)
